“Telesterion retreated and lit only at night like a firefly that lights due to some kind of bio luminosity of blue color (like Atlantic waves smashing to Belgian coastline.)”
During the first two weeks of lockdown, the flavor of time changed; it became bitter like a chewed-up bubble gum that we continue to nibble on, out of compulsion. That’s how we felt. Out of tune. And it was the same for all the rest, the young and the old alike. The nights “inside” felt endless.
In my sleep I kept seeing a shaman, shrouded in black; he was waving his wooden sticks towards Persephone, who was submerged in an infinite potential well, covered by data algae, whilst her mother was desperately looking for her via Google Search. My feeling—that our perception was an empirical condition maximized in times of crisis—was confirmed. Thereafter, a desire emerged towards an ideal European solidarity and integration (of the type that had probably just passed us irrevocably). This hippie empiricism soon led us to a rationalized conception of security, centered around the Image and the Net. Thus, immersed in data and streaming, without any human contact, we kept scratching ourselves at our balconies, or spitting out the flies caught in our open mouths, down towards our feet. The blackish, semitransparent pile kept getting gradually higher, and appearing similar to ourselves, as it covered us uninterruptedly. It reminded me of a three dimensional bioprinter that printed RNA chains. Thankfully, we perceived the passing of time through news bulletins, blasting through our TV sets, or our fingernails (that grew inwards). Outside, the moon continued to go through its phases during its 28-days cycle, just as it did before our Confinement. Our monuments however, without the eyes of enamored visitors upon them, were gradually getting emptied of photons. The Telesterion kept retreating, and lit up only at night, like a firefly lights up due to some kind of blue-color bioluminescence, like the waves of the Atlantic smashing against the Belgian coastline. The port became a vague oil painting by Bouzianis; a study in deconstruction and waste. Saint Zachary became a sparkling white pebble at the edge of blindness. The air was getting thinner, and clear of soot, as all the vehicles remained parked and all the factories closed. The adjacent hay fields rippled like waves under the wind, in the absence of the human carcinoma. As we were wandering around in our designated walks, feigning health and exercise, we kept stumbling upon our past selves, our history, or our moments that grew in absentia at different spots of the town, following parallel universes and alternative timelines. Nevertheless, nature resisted. When the sun set at the pier, the night flowers started filling the air with their scent at Synoikismos and our feet craved real contact with the earth. Underneath the fresh grass, each and every one of us could find their buried angels, the Jurassic fossil of a dandelion or the quantum principle of dualism, as a bastion of otherness; even deeper, the Saronic Gulf and its white clouds, randomly forming the shape of a cow of some western European breed, a procession of Lombardy’s recent dead, the heroic mountains of Pindos, even Maori rituals. Everything was present. The city’s universality, starting with the Eleusinian Mysteries, emerged throughout the centuries based on its structural elements, and spread towards the universe as an ointment-vaccine, meant to console us against the virus, as long as one was humble enough to absorb it and be appointed Hierophant. |
