UKON (Ulf Karl Olov Nilsson)
Invited by the city Gothenburg, Sweden
"We have the systems in place.
We have the most resilient strategy.
We are clearly past the hump on the blue curve.
We’re doing a full lockdown."
Nothing seemed unthinkable.
Excess mortality was normal. Connections unexpected. Loss of taste at the choir. A cheek-kissing 60th birthday party. Ramadan with Eid al-Fitr. Synagogues during Pesach. The Pride parade’s R number. A cruise ship, a hen party. People at the pre-upper secondary education level. We wanted an open society. We were forced to learn as we went. We had the chance of avoiding an Italy in Sweden. We huddled together in the cities. A market with wild animals. A religious service, a football match. Obesity and joint pain. The risk of domestic abuse. Suicides and alcoholism. Powerlessness and well as caprice. Joblessness as well as shortness of breath. Loneliness as well as T cell immunity. Taxi as well as bus drivers. Soap as well as water. It’s always like that when you look in the rear-view mirror. Not being able to breathe on your own. Being laid on your stomach. Drowning on the inside. These are the highest figures this century. It’s a strategy that has worked very well. We foresee a fairly positive development over time. The big failure is that so many are dying. That’s bad for Sweden’s brand. Hold your breath for five seconds. Exhale through almost-closed lips. Mist over a mirror. Stand up and walk around, if possible. Don’t touch your eyes with your fingers. We’ll have to see where this lands. We have the systems in place. We have the most resilient strategy. We are clearly past the hump on the blue curve. We’re doing a full lockdown. We’ve crossed all covid patients with the register of deaths. No country has put their foot down yet. It’s not spread by mosquitoes. It’s not spread in swimming pools. It’s tremendously serious. It’s hugely important to be vigilant. It’s about swollen, purple rashes on fingers and toes. It’s about the highest per capita death rate in the world. That is a political discussion we leave to the politicians. One person, ten people, a hundred people, a thousand people. The five thousand nine hundred and eighty-first human being. The five thousand nine hundred and eighty-second human being. Self-criticism is good. We could have worked better and faster with elderly care. We are top and bottom of the class. We’ll persevere. We cough sometimes. We wonder about the difference between sleeping and being put to sleep. We go home immediately at the smallest sign. Colleagues stand around crying. Support groups for mourners have been cancelled. Now PR campaigns for and against Sweden’s image are being readied. Anyone who feels the slightest cold. Anyone who sees connections that require notification. The rolling average and 460,000 years of life lost. All facts turn into sleep as soon as we’ve released them. We have to beware of false positive test results. We know that face masks are good and bad. Of course we don’t regard it as a contest. We now know what it means to breathe from the outside. We know that a breath should always be like the next one. We know who is a doctor and who is a child. We wanted to do our best.* * Everything in the poem, all the words, are inspired by the Swedish Public Health Agency's press conferences during the Corona pandemic |
Ingenting verkade otänkbart.
Överdödligheten var normal. Sambanden oväntade. Smakbortfall vid körsång. En kindpussande 60-års fest. Ramadan med eid al-fitr. Synagogorna under pesach. Håll andan i fem sekunder. |
